Acai Berry and ORAC
What is ORAC
ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) is the measurement of the antioxidants to absorb free radicals. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules and their formation is unavoidable. Tens of thousands of these molecules are created in our body every day. According to free radical theory, free radicals accumulated in the body damage the cells and they are the main reason for aging.
Body produces some of the antioxidants naturally like coenzyme Q-10 and glutathione. As we age, body produces less antioxidants. To prevent oxidative damage of free radicals, we should include antioxidant foods in our diet. There are several foods that have high ORAC values. Foods with high ORAC values include pomegranates, black raspberries, wild blueberries and acai berries. However, acai berry has remarkably higher ORAC score.
Recommended ORAC levels
The USDA (The United States Department of Agriculture) recommends to consume 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units daily. Unfortunately most of the people are taking even less than 1,000 ORAC units daily. Blueberries have outstanding reputation as antioxidants, you can take 2,400 ORAC units per 100 grams of blueberry. However, antioxidative power of acai berries is even better. Per 100 grams of acai berry, you take 5,500 ORAC units (more than recommended value for daily intake).
Benefits
Foods with high antioxidative capacity help to fight with diseases like cancer or diabetes. By preventing oxidative damage to cells, they also slow down aging process and aid to lose weight. Acai berries do not only have highest levels of antioxidants and they also taste good, so it will be a good idea to include this fruit in your daily diet.
