What are Antioxidants

Antioxidants are special substances found in certain foods that can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to your body. When oxygen is consumed in our body, oxidation process takes place. This process naturally produces free radicals which are harmful to body.

Antioxidants neutralize the negative effects of free radicals produced in oxidation process. Therefore, they can prevent many health problems like cancer, coronary heart disease, diabetes. Antioxidants also enhance immune system, reduce blood pressure and slow down the aging effects. Only a few enzymes in our body can neutralize free radicals, so we need to consume antioxidant foods daily. Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) has become the industry standard to measure antioxidant strength of foods and juices.

Mostly known antioxidant foods are carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, leafy vegetables, strawberries, blueberries, acai berries, nuts/seeds, whole grains, soy, red wine, cranberries and pomegranate.
